Position Overview – Avionics Crew Chief (Working Lead)

The Avionics Crew Chief is a working lead responsible for performing and overseeing daily avionics maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and inspections. This role participates directly in hands-on technical work while also guiding technicians, coordinating tasks, and ensuring all work meets FAA regulations and company quality standards. Expertise in Garmin avionics systems is essential, as the Crew Chief supports complex troubleshooting and system integration.

Key Responsibilities

Working Lead Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of an avionics technician, including troubleshooting, installations, wiring, system checks, and documentation.
  • Lead by example on the hangar floor through active participation in daily work.
  • Assist technicians directly with complex tasks, system configurations, and Garmin integrations.
  • Provide technical expertise and support while maintaining personal productivity on assigned aircraft.

Operational Oversight

  • Assign, coordinate, and monitor avionics tasks for upgrades, inspections, repairs, and installations.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with FAA regulations, company procedures, and quality/safety standards.
  • Work closely with maintenance, engineering, and project management teams to meet production timelines.
  • Assist with generating labor and material estimates for work orders and installations.
  • Support project planning and execution to maintain efficient workflow.

Technical Expertise

  • Serve as the go-to expert for Garmin avionics systems, including installation, troubleshooting, programming, and system integration.
  • Interpret and apply wiring diagrams, schematics, manufacturer instructions, and system manuals.
  • Validate the accuracy and functionality of completed avionics work.

Team Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day direction, mentorship, and coaching to avionics technicians.
  • Conduct toolbox and safety meetings to support communication and continuous improvement.
  • Promote a positive, accountable, and safety-driven team culture.
  • Offer performance feedback and identify skill development needs within the crew.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure accurate documentation of installations, repairs, inspections, and testing results.
  • Maintain avionics records, log entries, and traceability of parts.
  • Support internal audits and FAA inspections as required.

Quality & Safety

  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure adherence to industry best practices.
  • Inspect and verify completed avionics work to ensure compliance and high-quality results.
  • Identify, correct, and document any discrepancies or non-conformances.

Customer & Project Support

  • Communicate with project managers and customers regarding technical issues, work scope, and aircraft status.
  • Resolve avionics-related concerns quickly to maintain schedule integrity.

Qualifications

  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) License or Repairman Certificate preferred.
  • Strong expertise in Garmin avionics systems required.
  • Citation aircraft experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on avionics installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Prior crew lead, senior tech, or leadership experience in an avionics environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of avionics systems, wiring diagrams, and FAR Part 145.
  • Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and maintenance systems such as Corridor.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a customer-focused mindset.

Work Environment

  • Aircraft hangar and shop setting with moderate physical activity.
  • Occasional travel for training or aircraft support.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Extended standing, stooping, climbing, and work in confined spaces.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, heights above six feet, noisy environments, and in-flight testing.
  • Schedule:
  • Monday–Thursday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Unscheduled overtime as needed.
