Job Title: Safety Manager
Location: El Monte, CA
Department: Human Resources
Reports To: VP of Strategic Planning
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM (4×10s possible)
Position Summary
Lead all aspects of transportation and warehouse safety, ensuring compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company policies. You’ll develop and deliver safety programs, oversee driver training and vehicle inspections, manage accident investigations, and drive continuous improvement across facilities and fleets.
Key Responsibilities
1. DOT Compliance & Driver Safety (60%)
- Enforce Hours‑of‑Service, FMCSA regulations, vehicle inspections, and driver qualification standards
- Maintain DOT documentation: driver logs, vehicle maintenance records, inspection reports, CSA scores, IFTA/IRP mileage reports
- Perform Level 1 & 2 DOT inspections; audit GPS, ELD, and dash‑cam (e.g., Samsara/DriveCam) data
- Conduct on‑site branch inspections; recommend corrective actions
- Coach drivers on defensive driving, accident prevention, and regulatory adherence
- Design and deliver driver training and refresher courses on DOT rules and company policies
- Investigate accidents to determine root causes, draft corrective‑action plans, and ensure regulatory reporting
2. Warehouse Safety & Compliance (30%)
- Develop and manage OSHA‑compliant health & safety programs, IIPP, emergency response plans, and SDS
- Administer OSHA logs and audit records; enforce site‑wide safety protocols
- Conduct root‑cause analyses for incidents, near‑misses, and injuries; implement hazard‑elimination strategies
- Deliver new‑hire orientations and role‑specific safety training
- Perform routine safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments
3. Continuous Improvement & Collaboration (10%)
- Identify opportunities to enhance safety culture and streamline compliance processes
- Lead weekly safety topic rollouts and partner with HR, Admin, and Operations on workers’ comp and auto claims
- Facilitate safety‑committee meetings and produce clear communications to stakeholders
- Participate in company events and cross‑departmental initiatives as needed
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering/Management, Transportation Management, or related — or equivalent experience
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in CDL/DOT/FMCSA compliance and transportation or warehouse safety
Certifications (Nice‑to‑Have)
- PMP, CSP, OSHA, or Construction Management Certification
- Valid CDL and driver’s license
Required Skills & Abilities
- Deep knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, CSA, IFTA/IRP, and related regulations
- Proven track record driving safety‑culture change and compliance improvements
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills
- Intermediate math proficiency (inventory counting, unit conversions, markups/discounts)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to lead training, facilitate meetings, and interact with drivers, management, and regulators
Physical & Work Environment
- Frequent travel to branches and affiliates; ability to perform vehicle inspections (climbing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs)
- Able to work in freezer (–50 °F to 28 °F) and cooler environments
- Comfortable typing and sitting for extended periods; moderate‑noise warehouse settings
- Occasional evening or weekend work as required
Other Requirements
- Business‑level English (reading, writing, speaking); Japanese or Spanish preferred
